Happy Funny Hat Day (Gabrielle)
Yesterday was April 1st, April Fool’s Day according to some. It dawned gray, dreary and nasty. I hadn’t slept well the night before, I woke up late and then was startled out of bed by Justice wandering into my room without so much as a courtesy knock when he was supposed to be safely in his room. It wasn’t a nice beginning.
The day trudged on in much the same vein. Lots of crying, screaming and bickering from the children and weary sighs from the grown ups. Crystal left to do her grocery shopping and I surveyed the day in front of me with fatigue and fear. Lunch time rolled around and I decided to rebel against the dreariness and the crabbiness. It was April Fool’s day! A day of senseless goofiness! I should embrace this and glory in the fun of the day. So for lunch we had our very first Funny Hats Party.
The children and I each put on some sort of funny hat. I had a green woolen hat with Arianna’s pink cap on over it. Samuel started out with a bear sweater on his head and added a hat on top of that as the lunch went on. Arianna wore a very normal hat inside out, Isaac wore his winter hat and Noah and Justice kept swapping hats back and forth it was hard to keep up with which one was who’s.
We ate macaroni and cheese out of wooden salad bowls and pudding out of little serving dishes. We used creamers and small pitchers for cups and we each had a funny kitchen utensil for our silverware. Arianna used a melon baller, Isaac used a slotted serving spoon, Samuel used a spatula and I had a special spoon that came with our yogurt maker. The little boys each had a brightly colored plastic spoon because I figured they’d rather eat their food than revel in the oddness of their silverware. Arianna folded the napkins into hat shapes and we sat around the coffee table in the front room. As we ate we told some of the world’s worst knock-knock jokes and we toasted Funny Hat Day and funny hats.
After lunch we cleared the table and played Fruit Basket Upset, a game similar to musical chairs, but requires more yelling and running. I’m afraid Noah and Justice didn’t quite understand the nuances of the game so it wasn’t as competitive as perhaps some would have liked, but I got to yell and dash from one place to another. When I’d had just about as much Fruit Basket Upset as I could take we doffed our hats and bid farewell to Funny Hay Day.
Goodbye, Funny Hat Day! Thanks for dropping in.
Um…something ate the rest of your post.
Yeah, I know. My Internet connection was cutting in and out while I was writing this. I was afraid I’d accidentally posted it twice, but it turns out I’d only posted it half.
